If you are currently in the process of creating plans for your custom-designed shed on the Shed Boss app, you should have a serious think about adding solar photovoltaic (PV) panels to the rooftop.
Why? Because Australia is now the most cost-effective place in the world to install solar panels to both home and business rooftops!
Indeed, research by the International Energy Agency Photovoltaic Power System Programme (IEA PVPS) has confirmed this to be true. The news was shared in their latest 'Trends in Photovoltaic Applications' report, which drew on data from different countries around the world.
Here in Australia, the cost of rooftop solar installation is at US$1.76/watts and US$1.61/W for residential and commercial respectively. That's the least expensive on the planet, especially since it costs between US$4.00-5.33/W for homes and US$2.80-3.20/W for businesses in France. Meanwhile in the United States of America, prices are also high at US$4.61/W for residential and US$3.44/W for commercial properties.
Shout it from the rooftops: One in seven households now has solar PV systems mounted on their roofs.
It makes sense that we have such affordable prices for rooftop solar considering how popular they are in the market. Nearly everyone in the country (87 per cent) would like a home with solar panels added to the roof, according to a survey by independent market research company Ipsos.
This research is backed by the Energy Supply Association of Australia (ESAA), which conveyed the good news that one in seven households now has solar PV systems mounted on their roofs. This equates to a 15 per cent penetration rate in the market.
"Australia has not been a laggard on renewable generation with this analysis clearly showing that we are have made progress in terms of sourcing energy from wind and solar and this can be expected to continue," said Matthew Warren, chief executive of ESAA.
But wait – there is even more good news on Australia's excellence with solar. We are ranked in the top 10 countries for combined wind and solar energy generation, showcasing that we are also performing well in renewable wind energy.
At the moment, we are in eighth place because 0.35 kilowatts of such green energy are consumed per capita. If more Aussies choose to add solar panels on their rooftops, so that we exceed the current one in seven statistic, our chance of climbing into the top five will increase dramatically.
Skillion is skilled for solar
The cost-effectiveness of solar panels in Australia benefits both residential and commercial sheds, especially ones that have a skillion or mono-pitched roof. A skillion roof style is more flat than a gable, because it only slants on one angle rather than forming a triangular peak in the middle.
Because all our structures are completely customisable, you can even choose the precise angle of the incline for your skillion roof, which in turn will enable you to perfectly align the roof's plane to the shape, size and scale of your solar PV panels.
Just as beneficial, commercial sheds with solar panels have positive branding benefits. More than half (60 per cent) of consumers feel that being environmentally conscious is a very important company trait, according to a global survey online by DoubleClick Performics.
By having rooftop solar panels on your commercial shed's roof, you are showing customers before they even step inside your business that you care about the environment. This allows you to show corporate sustainability, and that you walk the walk when it comes to actually investing in green energy and making the planet a better place to live for future generations.
